Building Emotional Strength in Young People

It’s normal to feel low sometimes. Not every sad feeling needs to be treated as a mental health problem. Learning to deal with different emotions helps children and young people understand themselves and the world around them as they grow.

A better way to support them is by giving chances to build emotional strength—especially after going through something difficult. This helps them handle future challenges more confidently. It’s easier when this is shown at home and supported by how schools manage behaviour.

The Role of Safe and Supportive Environments

Research shows that growing up in a safe and stable home is key to good emotional health. Parents’ wellbeing has a big impact on their children. If parents have faced tough experiences, like abuse or neglect, it can sadly increase the chances of their children facing similar challenges.

Most young people spend their time either at home or in school. That’s why it’s important to create safe spaces in both places where they can express their emotions and learn healthy behaviours. Poor role models or unsafe environments can make it harder for them to grow emotionally.
